چکیده

Turbo codes achieve the highest coding gain known and should be the best candidates for error correction in high-speed wireless systems. However, the standard implementation of their decoding algorithm suffers from a large latency and high power consumption making them improper for mobile interactive systems. To overcome this drawback, we systematically analyzed the Maximum A Posteriori algorithm, the key-building block of the decoder, and stated that memory accesses are the bottleneck. Therefore, we have systematically optimized the data transfer and storage. This paper presents the main results of this optimization, especially those concerning the memory organization and architecture. This optimization reduces the latency by a factor 600 and the energy per bit by a factor 20, allowing turbo codes application in future high-speed mobile systems.

Optimizations for the implementation of a turbo decoder

Turbo decoding techniques achieve near-optimal performance in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) at low Signal to Noise Ratios (SNR's). Amongst these techniques, convolutional turbo codes and product turbo codes are nowadays the most common ones. They have already been selected as a standard for the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) [Lit. 4]. In the future, they will probably also be ...

On a Low-Power High-Speed MAP Turbo Decoder Design

Turbo codes have become part of the third generation W-CDMA systems because of their extraordinary coding performance. However, decoder implementation in commercial systems suffers from power, latency and complexity limitations. Here, we address new optimization techniques to overcome these problems. This paper makes two contributions. First, SISO block is designed in a pipeline approach which ...

Application and standardization of turbo codes in third-generation high-speed wireless data services

This paper addresses the application of turbo codes for third-generation wireless services. It describes the specific characteristics of high-rate data applications in third-generation wide-band code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems that make turbo codes superior to convolutional codes. In particular, it shows the positive effect of fast power control employed in these systems on the rel...

VLSI architectures for SISO-APP decoders

Very large scale integration (VLSI) design methodology and implementation complexities of high-speed, low-power soft-input soft-output (SISO) a posteriori probability (APP) decoders are considered. These decoders are used in iterative algorithms based on turbo codes and related concatenated codes and have shown significant advantage in error correction capability compared to conventional maximu...

Configurable and Scalable Turbo Decoder for 4G Wireless Receivers

The increasing requirements of high data rates and quality of service (QoS) in fourth-generation (4G) wireless communication require the implementation of practical capacity approaching codes. In this chapter, the application of Turbo coding schemes that have recently been adopted in the IEEE 802.16e WiMax standard and 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard are reviewed. In order to process se...
